Counselling and Psychotherapy at Therap Ease
Counselling and Psychotherapy at Therap Ease
I’m a UKCP registered psychotherapist (CTA) (P) and hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling. Formerly I was involved in teaching and promoting physical health and wellbeing where I often noticed despite the commitment of a majority of individuals towards their physical health, a large proportion struggled to change or sustain change. To increase my knowledge and make better sense of our behaviour I became an NLP Practitioner where my energy was diverted towards psychological motivation. Learning how the drive to behaviours comes through the motivation of our thoughts and feelings changed my approach directing me into the depths of psychotherapy providing a good understanding to our roots.
Working in private and voluntary settings for 14 years my practice involves a long-standing interest in various types of eating disorders as well experience of a diverse range of issues such as; depression, low self esteem, sexual abuse, anxiety, grief, relationship difficulties and life changes etc. You don’t have to necessarily be in a crisis or on the verge of one, counselling benefits individuals who are experiencing underlying feelings of dissatisfaction generally with life or may be seeking a balance in life. There are many reasons that can bring individuals into therapy as an opportunity to grow, and develop to lead more fulfilling lives.
What is counselling?
Counselling is where one person helps another through purposeful conversation. Counselling is a method of identifying a practical solution to an identified problem such as a relationship difficulty, bereavement, stress, low self-esteem, depression or anxiety. The task of counselling is to give the client an opportunity to explore, discover and clarify ways of living a more satisfyingly and resourceful life.
Counselling provides a professional relationship between a trained counsellor and a client. This relationship is usually person-to-person and is designed to help clients understand and clarify the views of their life. Individuals learn to reach their self-determined goals through meaningful, well-informed choices and through resolution of problems of an emotional or interpersonal problem.
Why choose counselling?
People choose counselling because they feel unable to cope. They may feel depressed, anxious, alone or facing some difficulty they cannot see way their out of. In today's world it is often difficult to find someone with the time and inclination to be a good listener. Someone who can help you work through the issues that are affecting our day-to-day lives. Counselling can also be beneficial for people who want to explore their own potential for personal change or growth.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling can help you change and adjust to your current situation, empowering you to respond differently to stressful situations whether at home or work and is usually of a limited duration. Psychotherapy is normally a longer process, requiring the client to commit to working through the deeper issues that prevent them from achieving a fulfilling life.
How long will it take?
There is no easy answer to that question. It depends on many factors. It depends on the issues being explored, the length of time it takes for the relationship to form between client and therapist, how quickly the client is able to feel comfortable in expressing aspects of themselves and their pasts. It depends on the pace that the client sets for the work and that with which they are comfortable.
